Simon Fleury studio specialises in the preservation and care of photography and associated works. Based in North London, the studio is led by photographic conservator Dr Simon Fleury, who brings over 25 years of experience from London's Victoria and Albert Museum, where he was responsible for the care of world-class photographic holdings. Working collaboratively with specialist conservators across various projects, we serve museums, archives, private collectors, artists, and students seeking professional guidance in the care and safeguarding of photographic heritage.
We offer comprehensive conservation treatment for all photographic processes—from daguerreotypes and albumen prints to contemporary materials. Our practice is grounded in meticulous examination, documentation, and treatment, always responsive to the specific needs of each collection and client.
Beyond conservation treatment, we've developed studio-based digitisation capabilities in response to preservation needs. Working recently with a collection of rare 17th and 18th century recipe books, we established protocols for safely capturing fragile materials requiring specialist handling. This integrated approach—where conservation assessment, treatment, and digital capture happen within the same environment—ensures the highest standards of care whilst creating crucial access copies for materials too vulnerable for regular consultation.
The Conservation Lab, housed within our studio, reimagines conservation as an expanded and experimental practice. Building on Simon's practice-led PhD research into relational and experimental conservation, the Lab provides a collaborative setting for exploring conservation beyond conventional boundaries. It represents our commitment to pushing the field forward—blending technical expertise with creative inquiry to address the social, political, and environmental dimensions of preservation in dynamic ways.
We're committed to addressing the growing skills gap in photographic conservation through structured educational initiatives: Equivalent Experience, a nonprofit 9-month Photographic Preservation and Care Trainee Programme; public training days in photographic preservation for West Dean College; and workshops and intensive courses for professionals and emerging conservators. These initiatives create a hub for innovation, practical learning, and creative exploration, where traditional conservation techniques intersect with contemporary approaches.
We work alongside leading institutions including the Bodleian Library Oxford, the Wilson Centre for Photography, Tate, the Archive of Modern Conflict, and the Sir Elton John and David Furnish Collection. Our collaborative approach extends to artists, photographers, and grassroots organisations, fostering dialogue between conservation practice and wider cultural contexts.
Simon's recent practice-led PhD underpins much of the studio's approach to innovation and conservation research, bringing together decades of hands-on expertise with critical engagement in how conservation practices respond to our evolving cultural landscape.
At Simon Fleury studio, we balance tradition with experimentation. Whether undertaking delicate interventive treatment, developing new preservation strategies, or training the next generation of practitioners, we remain committed to innovation, collaboration, and responsiveness to the needs of photographic heritage in all its forms.
